
On Saturday, January 2, 2010 from 9:00a.m. – 12:00 p.m. the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center will hold a winter bird banding open house. For over twenty-five years Squam Lakes Natural Science Center has been banding and monitoring the birds at their winter feeders. This event is open to the public who are welcome to join staff members and volunteers any time from 9:00a.m.until12:00p.m. to discover how and why birds are banded—and help in the process!

For the umpteenth year, local storyteller and droll eccentric, George
"Rusty" Locke will drag in his guitar and banjo and present an
evening of clearheaded twaddle and musical memories at the Corner
House Inn in Sandwich on Thursday Jan. 7th at their Storytelling Dinner Program beginning at 6:30 PM.

Colorful storyteller Lauretta Phillips of Andover, NH spins yarns at the Corner House Inn’s Storytelling Dinner program on Thursday, January 14th. Lauretta Phillips has been telling tales since 1987. Her tales take you to places you never thought you would go and then she brings you back laughing.
Lauretta writes most of the tales she tells but has been known to tell some legends and folktales and some pretty tall tales. She often brings such characters with her as My Gal Sal; Dot – Owner of Dot’s Pretty Good Café; and Kate – Queen of the Klondike.

The Squam Lakes Natural Science will be opening its gates for a special 2-hour guided tour. Do you ever wonder what happens to the animals at the Science Center during the long, cold winter months? Come see the exhibit animals in all their winter glory. A staff naturalist will guide a walk on the Gephart Exhibit Trail and discuss the many ways the animals are well-adapted for life here in New Hampshire. Be ready to snowshoe (conditions permitting) and see how beautiful a wild animal’s winter coat can be! Snowshoes will be available at no extra fee.

Peter Brodeur, aka Bearded Turtle, appears at the Corner House Inn’s Storytelling Dinner Program on Thursday, January 21st. Corner House audiences know Peter as a teller of American Indian stories. The Squam Lakes Natural Science Center invites everyone to explore the creatures of snow. It’s cold and the ground is covered with a thick blanket of white snow. You can visit the Science Center with your children, grandchildren or as a “grown up” kid to dig, burrow, crawl and climb over piles of snow to create several creatures. Who knows what cool animals will emerge? Warm up with hot chocolate and marshmallow snowmen afterwards.

Sunday, Jan. 24th marks the 13th annual celebration of Robert Burns Night at the Corner House Inn in Center Sandwich. Robert Burns’ Nights are celebrated all over the world – “Wherever there are Scots” – as a way to honor all things Scottish and keep tradition alive. The event also is meant to celebrate the life and work of Scotland’s greatest poet Robert Burns on the anniversary of his birth in 1759. Before his death at the age of 37 Burns had written close to 600 poems and songs. One of his better-known works is “Auld Lang Syne.”
Pipe Major Gordon Webster (former piper to HM Queen Elizabeth), his wife Lezlie and their talented daughter and son from the NH School of Scottish Arts will be some of the featured entertainers. In addition, well known Tamworth resident and British Isles storyteller Marion Posner will help to make this year’s Burns’ Night one of the best yet!
Join us for a fun Scottish evening of verse, songs, piping and Highland dancing
and a delectable 5 course feast put on by the talented Corner House culinary team.

What do groundhogs really do on February 2nd? Where to and why do they disappear in winter?
