Jun. 4th - Sep. 30th Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is pleased to announce the opening the Blue Heron Preschool
Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is pleased to announce the opening the Blue Heron Preschool Holderness, NH –– The Blue Heron Preschool, a nature-based Montessori early learning center and NH’’s first Nature Preschool, will be opening in the Fall of 2010 at Squam Lakes Natural Science Center. This unique preschool will integrate two very successful and innovative educational philosophies. The learning environment will apply the educational philosophies of Maria Montessori. The second educational approach at the Blue Heron Preschool will focus on nature-based education with the goal to provide opportunities for children to interact with various natural communities and living things. The Blue Heron Preschool will be open to children ages 3-6, Monday –– Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The school will provide affordable tuition, excellent child to instructor ratios, and a unique and innovative learning experience for your child. Minds in Motion Series Wednesday, July 7 Wednesday, August 4 Wednesday, September 1 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Ages 3 and under - Parent MUST attend with child Holderness, NH - The mind and body of a young child are constantly on the move. Join Squam Lakes Natural Science Center and foster your child’s “natural curiosity” and explore motion from an animal’s perspective – jump like a frog, swim like a fish, crawl like a caterpillar, and fly like a bird. Sep. 8th - Sep. 22nd Native New England Shrubs Identification Course
Native New England Shrubs Identification Course Wednesday, September 8, 6 - 9 p.m. Sunday, September 12, 9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Saturday, September 18, 9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 22, 6 - 9 p.m. Holderness, N.H. - New England shrubs display a wide variation in size, shape, color, and characteristics of their bark, flowers, and fruits. The Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is offering a four-part adult-oriented course about native New England shrubs taught by Chris Mattrick, a Forest Botanist from the White Mountain National Forest, which introduces participants to the identification of about 50 species growing in this region.. Participants will also become familiar with family characteristics and historic uses through off-site field trips. Cost: $195/member; $225/non-member Pre-registration required – call 603-968-7194.
Sep. 11th Bird Identification Series: Raptor Migration
Bird Identification Series: Raptor Migration Saturday, September 11, 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. Holderness, N.H. - Every fall, thousands of migrating raptors – hawks, eagles, ospreys, falcons, and harriers – fly from their nesting areas in northern North America to their wintering ranges in the southern U.S. and Central and South America. The Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is offering a one-day workshop/field trip (suitable for ages 16+) to see raptor migration. Participants will meet at the Science Center and travel together (by van) to the Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory in Peterborough where Science Center Executive Director Iain MacLeod will use in-the-field techniques to demonstrate the finer points of identifying raptors up-close and afar. MacLeod will also explain the dynamics of migration. Mid-September is the peak time for viewing groups of hundreds of Broad-winged Hawks on their way south, so if the winds are right, there could be a good show. This is also when Ospreys, Bald Eagles, American Kestrels, Sharp-shinned Hawks, Cooper's Hawks, and Northern Harriers are on the move. Grandparent’s Day Sunday, September 12 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; last admission at 3:30 p.m. Holderness, N.H. – The Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is celebrating Grandparents Day with free trail admission for each grandparent accompanied by a paying grandchild. Sep. 19th In Search of Squam Lake's Tupelo Trees
In Search of Squam Lake's Tupelo Trees Sunday, September 19, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Holderness, N.H. - Join a Squam Lakes Natural Science Center naturalist for an adventure (suitable for ages 8+) on the shores of Squam Lake. Participants will carpool to the Meade Memorial Forest where the old growth tupelos will be brilliant fall red. Participants will find out more about this amazing tree with its dancing form and unusual presence this far north. There is no organized trail system so "exploration" is the word of the day! Cost: $7/member; $9/non-member Pre-registration required – call 603-968-7194.
Sep. 25th Autumn Festival
Autumn Festival Saturday, September 25 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; last admission at 3:30 p.m. Holderness, N.H. - Enjoy live animal presentations and crafts for children at this annual family festival at the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center. Children of all ages will enjoy the program “By Wings and Fins and Padded Feet” by award-winning author, storyteller, musician, and educator Michael Caduto (www.p-e-a-c-e.net). Caduto will sign his books following the program. Lunch will be available for purchase courtesy of Longhaul Farm. Sponsored by Community Guaranty Savings Bank of Plymouth. No reservations required.
